Dubai RTA Vs. Sharjah SRTA Permits: How to Apply for NOCs & Approvals

Applying for approvals from the Sharjah RTA (SRTA) isn’t quite the same as getting approvals from the Dubai RTA.

Both operate in different emirates, with their own rules, roles, and codes.

Dubai, for instance, boasts a modern transportation system with sleek metros and a vast road network, while Sharjah’s system is still growing and evolving.

If you’re feeling a bit lost about the differences between RTA and SRTA permits and NOCs, don’t worry, this article will break it all down for you and explain how to get the approvals you need in both cities.

Key Differences Between RTA and SRTA

RTA, or Roads and Transport Authority, in Dubai aims for an advanced transportation network and works hard to provide safer and better travel for all the UAE residents.

SRTA, or Sharjah Roads and Transport Authority, provides the necessary services for residents and develops traffic transportation according to international standards.

People often confuse the two authorities since they specialize in transportation and mobility, but there are key differences between them, such as location, contact channels, permits, and document requirements.

1- Location

RTA is responsible for projects and vehicles that are registered in Dubai, whereas SRTA is for projects and vehicles that are registered in Sharjah.

If your company is located in Sharjah and the project is in Dubai, then you need to get permits from the RTA in Dubai because each emirate has its own rules and codes.

2- Contact channels

RTA Contact Channels

RTA depends more on its online portal and smart services for receiving applications and providing services.

You can use the following contact information to apply for services or to contact the authority:

Official Website: Dubai RTA online portal

Phone: +971 4 284 4444

Email: ask@rta.ae

Head Office Location: RTA Head Office, Umm Al Ramool, Dubai, UAE

SRTA Contact Channels

SRTA depends on both digital and paper documents, and usually you need to go to the office personally.

SRTA contact information:

Official Website: Sharjah RTA online portal

Phone: 600 52 52 52 (within UAE)

Email: info@srta.gov.ae

Head Office Location: Industrial Area 5, Sharjah, UAE

3- RTA and SRTA permits and documents required

RTA services are divided into 3 categories: driver and car owners, public transport, and finally business and corporate, while SRTA services are divided into two sectors: the roads and the transport.

RTA’s common services:

The RTA online portal provides a section for the common services such as applying or renewing a driver’s license and paying vehicle fines to ease the process for individuals and provide the best services

1- Obtaining a driver’s license

Citizens, residents, taxi companies, and governmental entities are eligible to apply for this service and obtain a driver’s license.

The required documents for this service differ depending on the individual situation, whether they are residents, people with disabilities, etc.

The required documents for UAE citizens require only a valid Emirates ID.

For residents with visas issued in the other emirates, the required documents are

  •  Valid Emirates ID.
  • Copy of the tenancy agreement approved by Ejari or copy of the title deed as proof of residence.
  • Copy of the company’s trade license (Dubai branch and the branch that issued the residency).
  • Letter from the company certifying that the customer works in Dubai.
  • An official document proving that you are currently a student in Dubai.
2- Pay Vehicle Fines

Individual customers, citizens and residents, and companies are eligible to apply for this service as mentioned on the RTA portal, so almost anyone can apply for this service.

To get this done, here are the documents required for this service. Choose only one depending on the RTA instructions:

  • Fine number.
  • Plate details.
  • License number.
  • Traffic file number.

SRTA common services

SRTA provides a group of services that focus on roads and transportation, such as online taxi booking and NOC for connection of services (cutting asphalt, drilling pipes)

1- NOC for connection of services

By obtaining this NOC, customers are permitted to connect services by removing interlocks, cutting asphalt, or drilling pipes.

The required documents for this service are

  • Site General Chart.
  • Map showing the depth of the connection services.
  • Site plan including the service lines.
  • No Objection Certificate from the Planning & Survey Department (to provide the services of Etisalat/Du).
  • Official letter from the concerned authority, Electricity & Water Authority (Electricity, Water, Gas), Sharjah Municipality, and Emirates Telecommunications Corporation or Du.
2- Online Taxi Booking

It enables companies such as Uber to obtain the right to legally conduct their activities in the emirate through electronic registration in the system.

Services in common between RTA and SRTA

  • No Objection Certificates (NOCs).
  • Traffic and road engineering approvals.
  • Vehicle and driver permits.
  • Parking permits.
  • Public transport licensing.

While some services are similar, the application platforms, processing timelines, and digital tools vary and have different requirements.

RTA depends more on the online portal (RTA website and apps) in collaboration with other Dubai systems.

For example, the Nol card by RTA enables you to pay for all public transportation in just one click on your phone, which makes using the public transportation in the UAE easier.

SRTA uses both online forms and email submissions, but some services may require you to go in person to the authority office.

How to Apply for Permits and NOCs with RTA

First, register using the easiest way for you, your UAE pass or an RTA account. After that, choose a service from the Homepage and apply by following the instructions.

Once that’s done, you can pay the fees online unless the service is free, like with the E-scooter permit. Now, just sit back and wait for the approval; if there’s a hiccup, the RTA will send you an SMS to fix it.

1- Register on the online platform

Registering is simple; just follow the steps to register, and then you’re all set!

Search for the online portal and sign in using the UAE Pass or with an RTA account, as suggested by the platform, and then you can explore the platform and discover what’s new and what other services you can have.

2- Choose a service

You can navigate through categories by choosing “Home” on the navigation bar.

After that, choose the “all services” option or one of the listed categories (driver and car owners’ services, public transport services, and business and corporate services).

3- Apply for the service

After choosing the service, you can upload the required documents according to the RTA standards, such as choosing a clear file name and an acceptable file size.

4- Pay fees

This is the final step in the application process, and you pay online using an e-wallet.

Some services, such as the Electrical Scooter Driving Permit, are free, and you do not have to pay to obtain them.

5- Wait for the approval

The processing time differs depending on the service you applied for, but the RTA provides a detailed explanation, including the time the service takes.

If there are any mistakes, the RTA will send you an SMS to inform you about it.

How to Apply for Permits and NOCs with SRTA

SRTA permits applications, and e-services may slightly differ from RTA because not all services are available on the website, such as NOC requests for construction works within the right-of-way, so you need to attend in person or contact them.

For the application process on the website, it is the same for RTA. First, visit the online portal and navigate through the services, and then choose the service and then apply for it.

It is useful to ask an RTA consultant about the application process, and for any accurate information, it is always a good idea to visit the SRTA online portal or contact them.

The SRTA and RTA platforms provide a clear structure and easy-to-use interface, so do not worry about not being able to find the service or getting confused.

Choose the service you want, and then submit the files and pay the fees.

Conclusion

The differences between RTA and SRTA are crucial to understand when you’re applying for permits and NOCs.

RTA is responsible for road services in Dubai, whereas SRTA is for Sharjah. It is important to apply to the right authority to obtain NOC or road permits, whether online or in person.

To apply on the online platform, visit it and register your information as explained previously.
